Background

In 2001, Gallup introduced the world to the original Clifton StrengthsFinder® assessment in Now, Discover Your Strengths. The book became a New York Times bestseller and sold nearly 2 million copies. Its author and creator of the Clifton StrengthsFinder®, former Gallup chairman Dr. Donald O. Clifton (1924-2003), was named the Father of Strengths-Based Psychology by the American Psychological Association.

In 2004, the assessment’s name was formally changed to “Clifton StrengthsFinder®” in honor of its chief designer.
In 2007, Gallup published StrengthsFinder® 2.0 and unveiled the new and upgraded version of its popular assessment. StrengthsFinder® 2.0 instantly became a Wall Street Journal, Businessweek, and USA Today bestseller. The book has sold more than 4 million copies to date and was named Amazon’s bestselling book of 2013.

Gallup has published more than half a dozen books focused on strengths-based development in various roles. All of these books have used the Clifton StrengthsFinder® as the cornerstone of strengths discovery and personal improvement.

How does it Work?

The Clifton StrengthsFinder® measures the presence of talents in 34 general areas referred to as “Signature themes.” These Signature themes represent what how you naturally think, feel, and behave as unique individuals.

Over a secure connection, the Clifton StrengthsFinder® presents 178 items to the respondent. Each item consists of a pair of potential self-descriptors, such as “I read instructions carefully” versus “I like to jump right into things.” The descriptors are placed as if anchoring polar ends of a continuum. The respondent is then asked to choose from that pair the statement that best describes him or her, and to what extent that chosen option is descriptive. The respondent gets 20 seconds to respond to a given pair of descriptors before the system moves on to the next pair. (Clifton StrengthsFinder developmental research showed that the 20-second limit resulted in a negligible item non-completion rate.)

Upon completing the Clifton StrengthsFinder® assessment, respondents receive a report displaying their top five (most dominant) themes. The respondent then has the opportunity to delve into those themes to discover his or her greatest talents.

StrengthsFinder®, Clifton StrengthsFinder® and the 34 Clifton StrengthsFinder® theme names are the property of Gallup Inc. For more information visit www.gallup.com
